On Tuesday, October 28, 2008, my science classes will be watching the Discovery Channel movie, “Supervolcano”. While there is no rating on the movie, due to mild language/thematic elements, I want you to be informed about what they will be watching. The DVD was purchased a few years ago through the Discovery Channel Teacher Education Website. The scientific issues discussed in this movie mirror the sixth grade standard course of study, and I feel this would be a valuable experience for your child.

The Lorax & Project Learning Tree

As we are winding down the first week of school, everybody seems excited about the possibilities of the upcoming school year. In science, we've started our first unit on "Human Impact on Land". Dr. Seuss's movie "The Lorax" gets to unit up and going as we delve into the ways humans impact Earth. The kids will also be working on a collaborative project entitled Project Learning Tree, where we will examine our own community. assess the impact we have on it, and critically explore ways we could make our community a better, healthier place. PLT prides itself on not teaching kids what to think, but rather how to think.....Personally, I can't think of a better skill to learn!

This weekend, I had the privilege of going mountain biking with two of my students who had never been riding before. We had a blast, while also learning a few things about each other!!!
As an educator I have the power to be a part of great things in the lives of my kids. No other profession in the world (outside of parenting) grants that type of opportunity. This weekend I was reminded what an awesome responsibility I have as teacher.
I've started working with a local non profit that works to get kids out on mountain bikes while simultaneously teaching responsibility, hard work and respect for the environment.
I've been inspired lately that real change can occur when we are willing to take what we love doing and share it with others. I encourage you to do the same.

I'll end it with my latest mantra:
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has. – Margaret Mead"

OPTIONAL- Science Research Project

As we begin the new year, Brogden Middle School's science classes will begin preparing for the 2008 Science Fair. Due to time constraints, the Science Fair will be optional, and a Science Night for students and parents will be held in the Brogden Gymnasium on February 19, 2008 from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm. Science Night will be a time for parents and others to observe what students are learning in the science classroom and participate in lab activities. Student posters, PowerPoints, blogs, webpages, etc. will be on display. Visitors can put their science knowledge to the test and pay a middle school science quiz game. Come and play, “Are you smarter than a middle schooler?”.
Students who choose to participate in the Science Fair and meet all of the requirements will receive a catered lunch. A select few students who complete exceptional projects will be chosen to accompany their science teacher and other students to a Durham Bulls game during the school day.
This project has three parts: a scientific research paper (very detailed and specific; there will be more details in a packet your child will be receiving if they express interest), a display board (on a tri-fold board, see your child's science fair packet for more details), and a visual, which could be a PowerPoint presentation, a model, or any other visual representation of the student's project.
In addition to the optional Science Fair project, we need several students to volunteer to work as student helpers at Science Night on February 19th. These students will help demonstrate and explain labs and discuss what we are doing in the 6th grade science classes with visitors. These student volunteers must provide their own transportation to and from Brogden on that evening. They will get to enjoy the catered lunch as well.

Here is a list of Science Fair dates to keep in mind:
*Wednesday, January 23rd-Science Fair Topic and Parent Signature Due
*Thursday, January 31st-Visual Presentation Method Due (the visual presentation is not due on this date, only what kind of visual presentation the student is going to complete)
*Friday, February 8th-Rough Draft of research paper due
*Friday, February 15-Science Fair project due!!!
On this date, Students must have everything completed
1.) Final version of research paper
2.) Display Board
3.) Visual
*Tuesday, February 19th-Science Fair Night in Brogden's Gymnasium, 6:00-8:00 pm

The Project

Part 1:
The Written Research Paper
A guideline for students writing a scientific research paper

All students in 6th grade students must include a written paper as part of their science research project. The completed paper should be placed in a folder and typed.

The report should include the following in this order:

1. Title Page Center the title of your research paper and give your purpose if it is different from your title. Include your name, grade, and science teacher.

2. Table of Contents List the order and page numbers of each part of your research paper.

3. Research This is the bulk of your paper. This is where the information you found while researching your topic will be presented. The information in this part of the paper should come from encyclopedias, science books, magazines, interviews, and the internet. This part should be at least 3 pages, but no more than 5 pages long. The format of the paper is as follows:

Paragraph 1 – Introduction
Paragraph 2 – Begin Body of Paper. This part must include the following subtopics in the following order:
1. History of Topic
2. Importance of Topic
3. Current Events of Topic
4. Thorough explanation of visual method
5. Student Choice Subtopic #5
6. Student Choice Subtopic #6

Each of the subtopics should be at least 1 paragraph long, maybe more. Keep in mind, in the Research section of the paper, you need at least 3 pages of typed, doubled spaced, 12” font.

Last Paragraph - Summary/Conclusion

4. Acknowledgements Acknowledge or thank any person (parents, guardians, family members, a teacher, a scientist, a doctor, a company) who helped you with your research.
5. Reference List List books, magazines, internet sites, etc, that you used in your research. There needs to be enough information for your science teacher to find the information you used. Include page numbers, dates of publications, full titles, etc.

Use this as a guideline to create the perfect research paper.

Use this list as a guideline when choosing a research topic, although you can research anything that you would like as long as I have said that your topic is acceptable.

6th Grade Dance Info

This Friday January 25 is Brogden Middle School's SIXTH GRADE DANCE!!!! We wanted to send out an email with some important information and requests:

1. The dance is for Brogden Sixth graders only
2. The dance is from 7pm to 9pm in the cafeteria.
3. Please be at Brogden no later than 9:00pm to pick your child up.
4. The dance will be chaperoned by 6th grader teachers and administration.
5. The cost is $5.00. Snack will be available for purchase.

Now our requests for you:
We need volunteers to run the snack booth. Please email me if you can help out.
We need food and drink donations. You can send these in anytime this week. Soda and non-perishable snacks like candy, cookies, chips.

Ahhhhh, a nice long weekend is upon us! But then we are in it for the long haul! So enjoy.
I figured I'd run this question by you guys to see if anyone has any info to share! So, here it goes.

This morning while I was reading the paper, I learned about a local company that produces educational games for the iPod. So I went to their website to check it out. It looks really cool! In fact, I can almost visualize how I would use in my classroom. Personally, I have the old iPod classic, and have not upgraded to the new fancier Nano. However, it appears this software will work on most. So I am going to figure out how to get a few new iPods for my class. In the meantime, I am curious if anyone has any experince with this company/program?

I ask because,technology is an integral part of life today. While I try, (sometimes successfully sometimes unsuccessfully), to integrate it into each of my classes, it is vitally important that all of our kids become fluent with it's use.

So, again, my question for you is this. Has anyone used this software before? Is anyone using other types of technology software that is ENGAGING with your kids? If so, I'd be curious to hear about it.

Science Rocks.....no really, today it did!

Wow, what an incredible Music Demo day we had!! While the overall number of kids who brought instruments was down from years past, excitement was at an all time high. For the first time, we had a live performance from Brogden's own KISS THE ANGEL band!!! Thanks to Danny and Brad for sharing their exceptional talent! Class after class, teacher after teacher, administrator after administrator kept stopping by to see what the fuss was all about.
I don't know about you guys, but I really enjoyed class today!

Welcome Back!!!

If you are anything like me, the Holiday Season felt like it flew by! Welcome back from 11 wonderful days of rest!

So here is an update as to what we will be up to over the next week or so:

Thursday (1/2/08)- We start the section on Sound: Chapter 18 Sections 1-5. You will be given a study guide with 60 questions on it that you are to work on after we complete each section. The completed study guide is due next Thursday (1/10).

Tuesday (1/8/08) - MUSIC DEMO DAY!!!!! Bring in your favorite instrument and join us in entertaining one another. I will have my guitar and sound system setup. So if you have an electrical instruments, bring them in and we will hook them up to the sound system.

Friday (1/11/08) - Chapter 18 Test

A Successful Big Chocolate WOW!!!!

Without fail, the WOW unit is the most popular "learning" experience our kids participate in during their sixth grade tenure. Year after year, the excitement of our current sixth graders spreads across Brogden. In fact, we are often visted by our former students asking if they can come back and help in order to relive the experience.
The theme of the WOW unit is Chocolate and each teacher embraces the topic during their class. In Science Class, the kids make Chocolate Ice Cream as an extention to their learning of States of Matter and Energy Transfers. In Social Studies, the kids make a time line documenting how cultures over time have used it. In Math, the kids build Chocolate Castles to scale. In Language Arts, the kids taste various types of chocolate and write a review of their "taste test".
I will try and post some pictures of the excitement. Thanks to everyone who helped make this unit one that the kids will remember!!

This week we reviewed energy. We talked about all the energy transformations and the different types of energy. We also took a test on the energy transformations, types of energy, and the examples of all the energy types. We did four different types of tests so that there was no cheating in the class. The test was pretty easy if you studied.
We also drew two pictures. One of the pictures was on an energy transformation. We had to draw a picture of an energy transformation that was randomly given to us. The other one was we had to draw one type of energy that we chose on our own. The pictures turned out very good. We all tried our best and we took up the whole class period to draw our picture.

This week we learned about energy. To learn about energy we did a lab. The lab was when we took a yard stick, two rulers, a marble, a piece of tape, and a wooden rod. You put the tape on the table and put the wooden rod on the end of the tape. You take the ruler and pick an inch line on the yard stick. Hold the ruler on the inch line on the yard stick. Roll the marble down the ruler so it hits the rod. You can measure how far the rod moved and you will measure the energy.
We also made energy books. You take two sheets of paper and fold them in half them staple them together. In the book we defined energy, work, power, kinetic, elastic, and gravitational.
We also watched podcast's. Some of us made a podcast's and they had fun. They demonstrated the different types of energy. The podcast were very funny and they looked fun to make.

What We Did This Week

On Monday we played a study game to help us study for the test. We split the room so it is boys vs girls. Ms.Hundredmark reads us the test and that is the study game. We take turns playing so that you can play against someone else. We keep score and sometimes the winning team gets a piece of candy. But only a small one.
On Tuesday we took a 30 question test.It was easy if you studied. The test was on earthquakes and volcano's. We graded the tests and we saw are grade. Most people did pretty well. the test was on what we have been learning for the past few weeks.

On Monday we played a study game to help us get ready for the test. We seperate the room boys v's girls. Then Ms.Hundredmark reads us the test one question at a time. We take tuns so each person goes aginst someone else. We keep score and sometimes the winner gets candy. But only a small piece.
We took a 30 question test on Tuesday. It was pretty easy if you studied. We got a study guide that was pretty much the test but in a different order. We did that on the weekend and then checked it on Monday.

Cameron's View - What we did in Science this Week

What we learned in science this week is how a seismograph works. A seismograph is a way to measure seismic waves. When the seismograph feels the vibratins of seismic waves the pen vibrates and draws lines on the rotating drum. These lines are the records of the earthquakes seismic waves. Scientist can look at the records and measure the earthquakes size.
We also learned about the fault monitors. There are four types of monitors. They are the Tiltmeters, Creep Meters, Lazer-Ranging Devices, and the GPS Satellites. The Tiltmeters measure vertical movement on normal and reverse faults. The Creep Meter measures horizontal movement on strike-slip faults. The Lazer-Ranging Devices measure horizontal movement on strike-slip faults. The GPS Satellite measures changes in elevation and tilt of the land as well as horizontal movement on reverse, strike-slip, and normal faults.

If you do not see anything, it means that I have not figured out how to do it yet. No matter what, all of the students will also be given a hard copy of the study guide.

Next Tuesday, November 20 the kids will be taking the Chapter 6 Test. While I realize the date is not ideal, as Thanksgiving Break begins the next day, please know testing them before this date would be too soon.

On another note, Tri-Weekly Reports go home this Friday. Many of you might be surprised at the grades you are seeing. Please know that only a few grades makeup this first Tri-Weekly Report, so if a child has done poorly on an assignment or failed to turn one in, it is affecting their grade more at this point than it will when more grades are input. As you might want to schedule conferences with the team, we are backlogged into January at this point. I will encourage you to email the teacher directly with imminent questions/concerns.

The Can Food Drive ends this Friday. I have put a challenge out to my homeroom to collect at total of 250 cans. Please send in what you can, as it is going to a good cause.

Hi Gang,

I am soooooo pleased to say that overall test/quiz grades are going up! We took a 15 question quiz on Friday that was graded and will be sent home to be signed by parents/guadians on Monday 11/5. So here is the scoop for the upcoming week:

Wednesday - Introduce Chapter 6: Earthquakes & Volcanoes

Wow, I can't believe that Thanksgiving is less than a month away. Time flies when your having fun!

Here is the "down low" on upcoming activities in science:

This Friday, the kids are going to be "quizzed" on Chapter 5. This will be the first quiz of the year, and will not be as inclusive as my actual "tests". Therefore, there will be no review for the quiz.

Next Monday and Tuesday, we are set to watch the Discovery Channel movie, "SuperVolcano". An opt-out permission slip will be going home with the kids on Tuesday. It only needs to be returned if you DO NOT want them to watch the video. Here is the link to the movie trailer:

Next Friday, October 19, the kids will be taking the Chapter 4 Test. This test focuses on Soil Formation. It will cover all of the units in Chapter 4 pages 108-133.

We have slowed down our pace to make sure we are adequately understanding the material. We have also completed a hands on activity for each section we learned about. Ideally, the kids have made the connection between the two.

On Thursday, we will review the test as a class. Again, the kids will know what they are being tested on, so please encourage them to take notes and ask questions during our review next Thursday.

The test has 35 questions: 26 multiple choice and 9 completion.

Soil Conservation

Today, the kids learned about the importance of soil conservation. We talked about how it is Earth's most valuable natural resource, as everything that lives on land is either directly or indirectly dependent on it.

They were given the task to develop a "Plot of Land" using a strict set of materials that would be able to withstand a massive rainstorm (i.e 500mL of water being poured on it). You can look at the before and after pictures of the work of our Soil Conservation Engineers!!

Here you see some pictures of what we've been up to in science class this week. On Monday, the kids dug up a sample of soil using the soil core tool. Then, the kids spent the next few days studying the noticeable soil layers and sorting the soil via the sieve, pictured above.

We finally got Mr. Griffin to show his true love of the Jiminy Kick-Its Team. He took the time out of his very busy day to kiss the bag of crickets that awaited him after the win! Ahhh, a picture is worth a thousand words! Go Crickets!!

Ode to Malik...We'll Miss You!

Our good friend, Malik, is leaving us! He is off to DSA to be reunited with his group of friends from elementary school. Malik spent many days visiting my 3rd period science class, where students would beg to work with him on daily assignments. On his own, he also made the decision to attend Mr. O'Neill's 4th period Social Studies class on days that his teacher would allow him. He has been an inspiration to the Wizards Team and will be sorely missed. Malik, we wish you the best of luck at DSA. Please keep in touch with us.

The Test is Over!!!!

We finished our second real test of the quarter today. We reviewed yesterday in class by playing the "Test Review Game". I read the entire test to the class, while each question was answered by two members of opposite teams. The winning team was rewarded with candy....fun fun!

The kids will be bringing home their graded test tomorrow, Wednesday 10/3/07. Please make sure you sign the test and give it back to them so they can turn it in for credit on Thursday. Periods 1 and 2 have already had the opportunity to correct their wrong answers. Period 3 and 4 will work on the incorrect answers at home and I will regrade when they return their test Thursday. Please help me by reminding your child that late work is not accepted. I'd hate to see them miss out on an opportunity to raise their test grade because they forgot to turn in their homework Thursday.

Today we reviewed the process of how sedimentary rocks are formed. Check out the video below to see the "Sedimentary Rock Race" that some of the students competed in. Each "layer" of clothing was supposed to be an example of a layer of "sediment" that gets laid down over time. The more layers the kids put on the bigger they got. In nature, overtime, the layers will compact and cement together, thus forming sedimentary rocks!

We also learned about Igneous Rocks today. Igneous Rocks are formed by the cooling of magma and lava. Depending on where the rocks originate determine whether they are intrusive or extrusive. Intrusive rocks are formed inside Earth. Extrusive rocks are formed on Earth's surface. Think interior and exterior when trying to remember where each rock originates. We watched the video posted on the blog and sang along to the catchy little tune.

It is my goal to have students update this blog everyday with a summary of what we did in class.
