Brogden PTA receives 10% of sales for that whole day – they are open from 6:30 am to 10 pm.  They are located at 776 Ninth Street.  Take out counts too.  We have been challenged to beat Easley’s total – they just received a check for $769 for their August First Tuesday.  Please share this info with the students and parents so we can get the word out. In science, we've started our first unit on "Human Impact on Land". Dr. Seuss's movie "The Lorax" gets to unit up and going as we delve into the ways humans impact Earth.  The kids will also be working on a collaborative project entitled Project Learning Tree, where we will examine our own community. assess the impact we have on it, and critically explore ways we could make our community a better, healthier place. We had a blast, while also learning a few things about each other!!!&lt;br /&gt;As an educator I have the power to be a part of great things in the lives of my kids. No other profession in the world (outside of parenting) grants that type of opportunity. This weekend I was reminded what an awesome responsibility I have as teacher. &lt;br /&gt;I've started working with a local non profit that works to get kids out on mountain bikes while simultaneously teaching responsibility, hard work and respect for the environment.&lt;br /&gt;I've been inspired lately that real change can occur when we are willing to take what we love doing and share it with others. margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px;" src="http://www.barbspics.com/sci/i_img_Science_Fair.jpg" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As we begin the new year, Brogden Middle School's science classes will begin preparing for the 2008 Science Fair. Due to time constraints, the Science Fair will be optional, and a Science Night for students and parents will be held in the Brogden Gymnasium on February 19, 2008 from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm. Science Night will be a time for parents and others to observe what students are learning in the science classroom and participate in lab activities. Student posters, PowerPoints, blogs, webpages, etc. will be on display. Visitors can put their science knowledge to the test and pay a middle school science quiz game. Come and play, “Are you smarter than a middle schooler?”.&lt;br /&gt;Students who choose to participate in the Science Fair and meet all of the requirements will receive a catered lunch. A select few students who complete exceptional projects will be chosen to accompany their science teacher and other students to a Durham Bulls game during the school day.&lt;br /&gt;This project has three parts: a scientific research paper (very detailed and specific; there will be more details in a packet your child will be receiving if they express interest), a display board (on a tri-fold board, see your child's science fair packet for more details), and a visual, which could be a PowerPoint presentation, a model, or any other visual representation of the student's project.&lt;br /&gt;In addition to the optional Science Fair project, we need several students to volunteer to work as student helpers at Science Night on February 19th. These students will help demonstrate and explain labs and discuss what we are doing in the 6th grade science classes with visitors. These student volunteers must provide their own transportation to and from Brogden on that evening. Visual&lt;br /&gt;*Tuesday, February 19th-Science Fair Night in Brogden's Gymnasium, 6:00-8:00 pm&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Project&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Part 1:&lt;br /&gt;The Written Research Paper&lt;br /&gt;A guideline for students writing a scientific research paper&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All students in 6th grade students must include a written paper as part of their science research project. The completed paper should be placed in a folder and typed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The report should include the following in this order:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Title Page Center the title of your research paper and give your purpose if it is different from your title. Include your name, grade, and science teacher.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Table of Contents List the order and page numbers of each part of your research paper.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Research This is the bulk of your paper. This is where the information you found while researching your topic will be presented. The information in this part of the paper should come from encyclopedias, science books, magazines, interviews, and the internet. This part should be at least 3 pages, but no more than 5 pages long. The format of the paper is as follows:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Paragraph 1 – Introduction&lt;br /&gt;Paragraph 2 – Begin Body of Paper. This part must include the following subtopics in the following order:&lt;br /&gt;1. History of Topic&lt;br /&gt;2. Importance of Topic&lt;br /&gt;3. Current Events of Topic&lt;br /&gt;4. Thorough explanation of visual method&lt;br /&gt;5. Student Choice Subtopic #5&lt;br /&gt;6. Student Choice Subtopic #6&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Each of the subtopics should be at least 1 paragraph long, maybe more. Keep in mind, in the Research section of the paper, you need at least 3 pages of typed, doubled spaced, 12” font.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Last Paragraph - Summary/Conclusion&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. Acknowledgements Acknowledge or thank any person (parents, guardians, family members, a teacher, a scientist, a doctor, a company) who helped you with your research.&lt;br /&gt;5. Reference List List books, magazines, internet sites, etc, that you used in your research. There needs to be enough information for your science teacher to find the information you used. Include page numbers, dates of publications, full titles, etc.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Use this as a guideline to create the perfect research paper.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Topics Available to Research&lt;br /&gt;Use this list as a guideline when choosing a research topic, although you can research anything that you would like as long as I have said that your topic is acceptable.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;· Earthquakes and/or Volcanoes&lt;br /&gt;· Plate Tectonics&lt;br /&gt;· Forms of Energy&lt;br /&gt;· Human Impact on Land&lt;br /&gt;· Sound and/or Light&lt;br /&gt;· Sun, Earth, Moon System&lt;br /&gt;· Planets in our Solar System&lt;br /&gt;· Space Exploration&lt;br /&gt;· Living Things in Ecosystems&lt;br /&gt;· Food Webs&lt;br /&gt;· Population Control&lt;br /&gt;· Adaptations and Natural Selection&lt;br /&gt;For example, you could choose to research Pangaea, since it falls under Plate Tectonics.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Part 2: The Science Display Board&lt;br /&gt;A guideline for properly arranging the layout of your display board&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Title of your project-This should be in the top center of your board&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;List 10 interesting things you learned while researching this topic:&lt;br /&gt;1.&lt;br /&gt;2.&lt;br /&gt;3.&lt;br /&gt;4.&lt;br /&gt;5.&lt;br /&gt;6.&lt;br /&gt;7.&lt;br /&gt;8.&lt;br /&gt;9.&lt;br /&gt;10.&lt;br /&gt;_______________&lt;br /&gt;Abstract&lt;br /&gt;(1 paragraph summary of research)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Visually Appealing Design (Picture or graph)-In center&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Part 3: The Visual-The visual is where you can get creative. The dance is from 7pm to 9pm in the cafeteria.&lt;br /&gt;3. Please be at Brogden no later than 9:00pm to pick your child up.&lt;br /&gt;4. The dance will be chaperoned by 6th grader teachers and administration.&lt;br /&gt;5. The cost is $5.00. So I went to their website to check it out. It looks really cool! In fact, I can almost visualize how I would use in my classroom. Personally, I have the old iPod classic, and have not upgraded to the new fancier Nano. However, it appears this software will work on most. So I am going to figure out how to get a few new iPods for my class. In the meantime, I am curious if anyone has any experince with this company/program?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I ask because,technology is an integral part of life today. While I try, (sometimes successfully sometimes unsuccessfully), to integrate it into each of my classes, it is vitally important that &lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;all&lt;/span&gt; of our kids become fluent with it's use. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, again, my question for you is this. Has anyone used this software before? Is anyone using other types of technology software that is ENGAGING with your kids? Year after year, the excitement of our current sixth graders spreads across Brogden. In fact, we are often visted by our former students asking if they can come back and help in order to relive the experience.&lt;br /&gt;The theme of the WOW unit is Chocolate and each teacher embraces the topic during their class. In Science Class, the kids make Chocolate Ice Cream as an extention to their learning of States of Matter and Energy Transfers. In Social Studies, the kids make a time line documenting how cultures over time have used it. In Math, the kids build Chocolate Castles to scale. In Language Arts, the kids taste various types of chocolate and write a review of their "taste test".&lt;br /&gt;I will try and post some pictures of the excitement. We did four different types of tests so that there was no cheating in the class. The test was pretty easy if you studied.&lt;br /&gt;We also drew two pictures. One of the pictures was on an energy transformation. We had to draw a picture of an energy transformation that was randomly given to us. The other one was we had to draw one type of energy that we chose on our own.  The pictures turned out very good. To learn about energy we did a lab. The lab was when we took a yard stick, two rulers, a marble, a piece of tape, and a wooden rod. You put the tape on the table and put the wooden rod on the end of the tape. You take the ruler and pick an inch line on the yard stick. Hold the ruler on the inch line on the yard stick. Roll the marble down the ruler so it hits the rod. You can measure how far the rod moved and you will measure the energy. &lt;br /&gt;We also made energy books. You take two sheets of paper and fold them in half them staple them together. In the book we defined energy, work, power, kinetic, elastic, and gravitational.&lt;br /&gt;We also watched podcast's. Some of us made a podcast's and they had fun. They demonstrated the different types of energy. We split the room so it is boys vs girls. Ms.Hundredmark reads us the test and that is the study game. We take turns playing so that you can play against someone else. We keep score and sometimes the winning team gets a piece of candy. But only a small one.&lt;br /&gt;On Tuesday we took a 30 question test.It was easy if you studied. The test was on earthquakes and volcano's. We graded the tests and we saw are grade. A seismograph is a way to measure seismic waves.  When the seismograph feels the vibratins of seismic waves the pen vibrates and draws lines on the rotating drum.  These lines are the records of the earthquakes seismic waves.  Scientist can look at the records and measure the earthquakes size. &lt;br /&gt;We also learned about the fault monitors.  There are four types of monitors.  They are the Tiltmeters, Creep Meters, Lazer-Ranging Devices, and the GPS Satellites.  The Tiltmeters measure vertical movement on normal and reverse faults.  The Creep Meter measures horizontal movement on strike-slip faults.  The Lazer-Ranging Devices measure horizontal movement on strike-slip faults. Many of you might be surprised at the grades you are seeing. Please know that only a few grades makeup this first Tri-Weekly Report, so if a child has done poorly on an assignment or failed to turn one in, it is affecting their grade more at this point than it will when more grades are input. As you might want to schedule conferences with the team, we are backlogged into January at this point. This will be the first quiz of the year, and will not be as inclusive as my actual "tests". We talked about how it is Earth's most valuable natural resource, as everything that lives on land is either directly or indirectly dependent on it. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;They were given the task to develop a "Plot of Land" using a strict set of materials that would be able to withstand a massive rainstorm (i.e 500&lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"&gt;mL&lt;/span&gt; of water being poured on it). We reviewed yesterday in class by playing the "Test Review Game". I read the entire test to the class, while each question was answered by two members of opposite teams. Check out the video below to see the "Sedimentary Rock Race" that some of the students competed in. Each "layer" of clothing was supposed to be an example of a layer of "sediment" that gets laid down over time. The more layers the kids put on the bigger they got. In nature, overtime, the layers will compact and cement together, thus forming sedimentary rocks!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We also learned about Igneous Rocks today. Igneous Rocks are formed by the cooling of magma and lava. Depending on where the rocks originate determine whether they are &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"&gt;intrusive&lt;/span&gt; or extrusive. Intrusive rocks are formed inside Earth. Extrusive rocks are formed on Earth's surface. Think interior and exterior when trying to remember where each rock &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1"&gt;originates&lt;/span&gt;.
