Supervolcano Movie........

Dear Parents and Guardians,

On Tuesday, October 28, 2008, my science classes will be watching the Discovery Channel movie, “Supervolcano”. While there is no rating on the movie, due to mild language/thematic elements, I want you to be informed about what they will be watching. The DVD was purchased a few years ago through the Discovery Channel Teacher Education Website. The scientific issues discussed in this movie mirror the sixth grade standard course of study, and I feel this would be a valuable experience for your child.

In the event you would like your child not to participate in the viewing of Supervolcano, please fill out the attached section below and have your child return it to me by Friday October 24, 2008.

For more information on the movie, please visit the website:

You can also watch the movie trailer, by clicking on this link:

Feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns.

Thanks,

Andrea L. Hundredmark

dv/er/ys Earths structure-The earth consists of several layers. The three main layers are the core, the mantle and the crust. The core is the inner part of the earth, the crust is the outer part and between them is the mantle. The earth is surrounded by the atmosphere. Till this moment it hasn't been possible to take a look inside the earth because the current technology doesn't allow it. Therefore all kinds of research had to be done to find out, out of which material the earth consists, what different layers there are and which influence those have (had) on the earth's surface. This research is called seismology.
The earth’s crust is composed of plates that are in constant motion because of the convection currents in the Earth’s mantle and outer core. It is this movement, called plate tectonics, that causes earthquakes and volcanoes.

The crust is not one piece. It is made up of about twelve pieces that fit together like a puzzle. Some plates make up the ocean floors, some make up the continents. The plates move about six inches a year (about the same rate that our fingernails grow).
